Most patients benefit from a dental examination every six months, but the exact frequency depends on your individual needs.

At Pensby Dental Practice, we tailor your recall schedule based on your oral health, risk factors, and any ongoing treatments. Some people may need to be seen more or less often. Regular examinations help us catch problems early, keep your mouth healthy, and avoid more complex treatment in the future.

During your dental exam at Pensby Dental Practice, we carry out a thorough assessment of your oral health. This includes:

● Checking your teeth for signs of decay or damage

● Examining your gums for signs of gum disease

● Inspecting your tongue, cheeks and other soft tissues for abnormalities (oral cancer screening)

● Assessing your bite, jaw joints, and any wear on your teeth

● Reviewing existing dental work (such as fillings or crowns)

● Taking digital X-rays if needed to check areas we can’t see visually

● Taking photographs if needed as a record of how your mouth is now, and to show you what we can see.

● If appropriate we may take additional records to allow us to plan your care optimally

We’ll also discuss your dental history, any concerns you have, and offer personalised advice to help you keep your smile healthy.

Tooth sensitivity to hot and cold is often caused by exposed dentine—the layer beneath your tooth enamel—or receding gums that reveal sensitive root surfaces. Common reasons include:

● Worn enamel from brushing too hard or acidic foods

● Tooth decay or cavities

● Cracked or chipped teeth

● Gum disease or recession

● Recent dental work, which can temporarily increase sensitivity

If you’re experiencing sensitivity, it's best to book an appointment. We’ll identify the cause and recommend the right treatment—whether that’s desensitising products, a filling, or another solution.

If you have a cold sore, we recommend rescheduling your dental appointment—especially if the sore is in its early or blistering stage.

Dental treatment around the mouth can aggravate the cold sore, delay healing, and increase the risk of spreading the virus. It may also make your appointment more uncomfortable.

Once the cold sore has completely healed (usually within 7–10 days), it’s safe to attend your appointment as normal. If you're unsure, feel free to call our team for advice.

Yes, Pensby Dental Practice offers dental plans to help patients spread the cost of their routine private dental care.

Our plans are designed to make ongoing care more manageable and include regular appointments to help maintain your oral health.

You can find out more on our Dental Plans Page, or contact our friendly team if you would like to discuss which option may be suitable for you.
